William F Koch
The biological benefits of quinones were first discovered by William Frederick Koch PhD, MD, former professor of physiology at Detroit College of Medicine and an instructor in Histology and Embryology at the University of Michigan in the early 1900s, and himself was a pupil of Moses Gomberg the discoverer of free radicals. He had a somewhat chequered history, which you can read about on a different website - www.williamfkoch.com. He also invented a cure for anthrax, and hoof and mouth disease, proven by spectacularly successful trials on experimentally infected cows and other small animals. He also predicted correctly that eventually antibiotics would lose their effectiveness against mutant multidrug resistant strains. You can read about these in his 1961 book on Free Radical Therapy. One might have thought he would be accoladed for these achievements, but sadly the medical world was not ready in those days before radio, TV, and the internet, and his place in science has still to be awarded him. WFK1 is named in honour of the man and his work.
