Your body consists only of protons, neutrons and electrons!
We all know about atoms, but electrons seem so remote from our everyday lives, that it is difficult to remember that we are composed of nothing else than atoms and the space between them. Asphalia works at an electronic level, - the very foundation of matter - not at the pharmacological levels associated with chemicals and drugs.
In the last part of metabolism electrons are separated from their Hydrogen protons by a membrane and this causes a potential difference across the membrane, somewhat like the plus and minus poles of a dry battery. Allowing the “current” to flow through the membrane creates energy in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), but sometimes there are electrons left over, especially when molecular oxygen cannot absorb them all. In such cases Asphalia steps in and catches the rogue electrons, acting as a powerful antioxidant (Alberts, Bray et al., 1994).
